Max Frankl, born in 1982, studied under Martijn van Iterson, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Frank Möbus at universities in Amsterdam, Basel and Lucerne and graduated ‘summa cum laude’, or ‘with highest honour’. He was the first German guitarist to be a member of the ‘European Jazz Orchestra’ and in 2012 was awarded ‘best guitarist nationally’ with the band ECHO Jazz. In 2013, he widened his possibilities for expression in New York with experts like Ben Monder, Aaron Parks and Chris Cheek. He was nominated for the German Music Author Prize in the ‘jazz’ category in 2014, and in the same year won the European Music Author’s Scholarship.
The cosmopolitan can be heard as a guitarist and composer on more than five albums and tours around the whole of Europe regularly with his groups. The Goethe Institute has already invited him to tours in Montenegro, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. At the moment, he spends a lot of time in New York which has become his second musical home.
