Sagmeister’s Jazzgitarre - Michael Sagmeister

Michael Sagmeister’s Jazz guitar

With his book ‘Michael Sagmeister’s Jazz Guitar’, the author presents a course not just for advanced jazz guitarists, but also for beginners, dealing with the scales used in jazz music in a clear way with the help of an exercise guide and play-along pieces.

Michael Sagmeister shaped Germany’s jazz scene in the 80’s and was one of the first who tried to make knowledge about playing jazz applicable to university courses. He is also the first ever German to be a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston and is professor at all important German workshops about jazz and popular music.

Michael Sagmeister has worked with famous artists like Pat Martino, Larry Coryell, Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Samuels, Wolfgang Dauner, HR Big Band, Willy Kennedy and Gerry Brown. His wealth of knowledge and practical experience as one of today’s renowned jazz and fusion guitarists are used in this course for advanced jazz guitarists in a detailed and didactically valuable way. The first three chapters (major scales, harmonic minor scales and melodic minor scales) can be used by beginners alongside their normal lessons, as all the elementary basics of jazz music are tackled here (the Five Pattern System, modes, scale splittings and scale connection, among others).

In doing so, it is always important to the author that the pupil deals with the scales and chords both theoretically and practically, internalizes them and is able to realise each of these in effective jazz melodic figures and chord sequences on his own instrument using the whole fingerboard. The abundance of exercises in seven further chapters (two chapters are dedicated to blues and minor blues) are like a treasure trove for each of the chord sequences and progressions needed in jazz. Sagmeister explains in detail how the particular scales can be musically applied with the help of improvisational concepts. At the end of every chapter, you will find interesting tips for practicing and for the practical use of each scale that has been covered. The corresponding CD with audio samples and play-along tracks round off the book, which offers a deeper insight into the topic of jazz guitar while remaining both comprehensive and easily understandable.
